Chapter 4: Hello, Leah
I went downstairs in my socks.
Dolores came behind me, still holding the pizza menu.
Mallory waited on the sidewalk with a cream envelope in her hand, wearing my coat and a very small smile.
"Mrs. Corbin," she said. "I wanted to say I'm sorry."
"You're wearing my coat."
"Preston said I could borrow it. I was cold." She held out the envelope. "He's hosting a dinner tonight for the investors at the Lakeshore Club. He wants you to come, so there are no hard feelings."
Dolores took the envelope out of her hand before I could.
She read the card and gave it back to me.
"It's a trap," she said. "He wants you in a room full of his friends, crying and shouting."
"Then he'll get the second half," I said.
Mallory's smile slipped for half a second. Then it came back, soft and wet.
"I hope you'll come," she whispered, and got into my husband's car.
At eight o'clock that night I walked into the Lakeshore Club in a green dress borrowed from Dolores's closet.
The private dining room was on the third floor. It had a long table, white candles and twenty guests.
I recognized most of them. Two investors. The chair of the board, who had walked out of the lobby that morning. A gray-haired woman I had never met, with Mallory's blue eyes and a fork halfway to her mouth.
Preston sat at the head of the table.
Mallory sat on his right, in a black dress, with her hair curled.
She had taken the seat I always took.
The talking stopped when the doorman announced me.
