Chapter 5: The Barn
He came across the causeway at noon, on foot, with a saddle bag and no escort.
Every Fen wolf stopped what they were doing to watch him come.
In ten years of marriage to the Fen's daughter, the Alpha of Kestrel Ridge had never once set foot there.
He stopped at the edge of the yard and looked at the black beams of the barn.
"I want to stay until the Moot," he said.
"No," I said.
"My wolf won't go home."
"That is a you problem."
"It is a you problem too," he said. "Because I can feel you in this yard from here, and it is giving me a headache."
It was giving me one too, but I wasn't going to say so.
Hetta came out of the cookhouse wiping her hands.
She looked him up and down and sniffed.
"Is he the one who made you cry on the road?" she asked me.
"I did not cry."
"I didn't ask if you did. I asked if he's the one."
"Yes," I said.
"Hm," said Hetta. "He's taller than I'd planned."
Corwin's mouth did something that was nearly a smile and was gone at once.
"I'll sleep in the barn," he said.
"The barn is burned."
"There's a corner at the back where two walls still stand."
I looked at it.
Two black walls, a few charred beams leaned against them and a heap of cold ash, which was exactly what he deserved.
"The barn," I said. "Not the house. Not the cookhouse loft, not the hearth, not the porch. You eat what Hetta gives you, you work when the Fen asks, and you leave at the Moot."
"Agreed."
"You don't come near me."
