Chapter 5: Ninth Floor

"You have five minutes," I said. "Go."

Dillon stepped closer. The lift doors began to close and he stuck out a hand to hold them.

"You think I'm a monster."

"I think you're a man who can't say no to one woman."

"It isn't what you think."

"Then tell me what it is."

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I watched him try. His throat moved. He glanced at the ceiling.

"I can't," he said.

"Then it's exactly what I think."

"Gillian, she has nobody. I've told you that."

"She has you, and your mother, and a boot she wears on the wrong foot."

"That isn't fair."

"Dillon. Which part was fair?" I kept my voice flat. "The ninety-nine times? My birthday? The fever?"

He flinched at the fever.

I had seen him flinch like that before, over small things. A lake road on a map. A car horn. A woman crying on the phone.

I had never asked.

"If you'd said one true thing to me in three years," I said, "I would be upstairs with you right now. Do you understand? You're not losing me today. You lost me the day you decided I couldn't be trusted with it."

"I'm trying to protect you."

"From what?"

His eyes slid away.

"Time's up," I said, and pushed the call button.

The lift doors opened.

I stepped in alone.

He stood there holding my ring, and the doors closed on him.

On the ninth floor the corridor was empty and hushed.

The suite door stood ajar.

Vaughn was at the window with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled, looking at the city. A bottle of champagne sat unopened on the table.
