Chapter 22: The Last Stunt

The foyer of the Chatsworth house had a ring light in it.

A man in a black cap stood behind a camera on a tripod, pointing it at the staircase.

Brooke stood on the third step in a white blouse, her hair pinned, her eyes bright with something that was not sleep.

Cade stood two steps below her with his hands hanging, in the same navy suit.

A tablet on a stand showed the number of people watching.

Four thousand, and climbing.

"There she is," Brooke said to the lens, and her voice rang through the hall. "The new Mrs. Chatsworth. Hallie, say hello to everyone."

"Turn that off," Benedict said.

"This is a public conversation. I'm exercising my right to speak."

"This is my house."

"Your house was built on a lie."

She lifted a single sheet of paper.

"Everyone, this is a contract," she said. "Signed by Walter Lovelace, nine years ago. It says that in exchange for a loan against his lake house, he gave his granddaughter to the Chatsworth family to marry. She never had a choice. She is a piece of property, and the Chatsworths have been laundering that for years behind a charity name."

The number on the tablet rose to six thousand.

I looked at the page.

The signature at the bottom was large and shaky, and it was my grandfather's.

I looked at it for a long moment.

It was good.

"It's a forgery," I said.

"You would say that."

"That page is dated nine years ago. My grandfather's hand didn't shake then. It shook only in the last two years of his life, and this signature shakes." I kept my eyes on the camera. "Whoever made it copied something recent."
