Chapter 7: The Dinner

That night I found Benedict on the back terrace, standing at the stone railing with his sleeves rolled.

The garden below was dark.

I held up the folded paper.

"My grandfather put this behind the case of his watch," I said. "He says you owe me an answer about the dinner."

Benedict looked at the paper for a long time.

"He was right," he said.

"Then give it to me."

He turned around and leaned back against the railing with his hands on the stone.

"My father had a heart attack at two o'clock that afternoon," he said. "I was in the cardiac ward when your car pulled into our drive."

I said nothing.

"My grandmother was at the hospital too. The housekeeper called her from the dining room at half past seven and told her you were sitting at the table alone."

"I sat there with two empty chairs," I said. "Nobody told me why."

"My father died at nine."

The terrace was very quiet.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"My grandmother sent a driver to your grandfather's house at six with a note. It said the dinner was off and why. Your grandfather took it at the door."

I thought of my grandfather that night.

I had come home at eleven with my shoes in my hand and found him in his chair in the dark.

He had looked up and called me by my mother's name.

I had thought he was just tired.

"He never told me," I said.

"I know that now."

"He was forgetting everything by then. He forgot the note." My voice cracked, and I pushed through it. "I thought you'd looked at a photograph of me and decided no."
