Chapter 11: Hanley Salvage
We took my father's pickup out of the barn.
It was a 1994 Ford with a cracked dash and a hundred and ninety thousand miles, and it started on the third try.
Boone drove.
I sat beside him with the brass key in my fist and the shotgun between my knees.
We did not talk about the night before.
He kept both hands on the wheel, and I kept looking at the red scratches I had left on the side of his neck.
Route 177 ran straight through flat country, past a car wash, a feed store, and a shuttered diner.
Behind the car wash was a long yellow storage lot with a keypad gate.
Unit forty was a ten-by-ten at the back, with a roll-up door and a padlock.
The brass key turned.
The door ran up with a long metallic rattle.
Inside there was a folding table, a lamp on an orange extension cord, and four cardboard boxes.
I walked in first.
The top box was full of paper.
I lifted out the first sheet and read it standing up.
It was a contract transfer.
Red Dirt Towing's Tulsa dispatch contract, assigned in full to a company called Hanley Salvage, effective the first of the month.
I read it again.
At the bottom, in a firm, sloping hand, was a signature that I had watched sign my wedding certificate.
Gus Haldane.
"Boone," I said.
He came up behind me and read it over my shoulder.
I heard him stop breathing.
"There are nineteen of these," I said, turning pages. "Every one of them is a contract the club owns. Every one is signed over to the Ravens. There's a cash receipt stapled to each."
"How much?"
"The first one's two hundred thousand dollars."
"He's been selling the club." His voice was low and flat. "He's been selling the club to Rook for three years, and he's been using your books to hide it."
