Chapter 8: Supervised Hour
"Then why are you the one waiting for me in a hallway?" I asked.
Kendra's smile stayed where it was.
I walked around her and pressed the elevator button.
Behind me Lorna said, "Oh, I like her better already," in a voice meant to be heard.
Two days later I stood by Joy's incubator and watched the social worker set up a chair.
She was a quiet young woman with a lanyard and a clipboard, and she had told me her job was to watch and not to judge.
"Mr. Ardrey will wash his hands and sit," she said. "I'll be here the whole time. Mrs. Ardrey, you can stay or step out."
"I'll stay," I said.
Nate came in through the unit door and stopped just inside it.
His badge hung on a new green lanyard.
He scrubbed at the sink for the full three minutes the sign said, then dried his hands on a paper towel and folded it twice.
Joy was sleeping with her hat pulled down over one eyebrow.
She had pink skin now, and a small round belly.
"She's so little," he whispered.
"She's ten ounces heavier than she was," I said. "She came off the breathing machine on the fourth day, and she cried for the first time on the sixth. I was holding her. She was furious about it."
His face did something I didn't want to see.
"Which side does she like to sleep on?" he asked.
"The left."
"Does she like to be talked to?"
"She likes it low. She doesn't like high voices. The nurses say the monitor goes up when they sing."
