He Let My Sister Die, So I Ended His Bloodline novel · Chapter 12 of 24

Chapter 12: Amber

Ronan crossed the room and read the screen over my shoulder.

Neither of us said anything.

"Haught," I said finally. "That's Slade's name."

"It's his father's."

"The old Alpha. He died eight years ago."

"Cara was fourteen then."

"And she was alive and had his blood for all fourteen years of it."

I stopped.

Mom had taken me out of Cedar Ridge when I was five, pregnant with Cara.

She had always said Cara's father was a man who died, and nothing more.

She had moved back into the pack when Cara was fourteen, with a new surname and two daughters.

Nobody ever asked.

Cara had amber eyes in a house of gray ones.

I turned and looked at the framed photograph of the two of us on the pier, sitting on top of the duffel.

I had packed it without opening it.

I lifted it out and turned it over.

The paper backing was held in with four small tacks, and I pried them out with a fingernail.

A folded sheet of yellow stationery slid out into my hand.

It was Mom's handwriting, shaky and slanted, the way it had been at the end.

"To Cara. When you're strong enough to hear it."

I read it standing up, because I could not sit.

She wrote that she had loved a man who was already promised to a political match.

She wrote that she had left before she showed, because she had known what that pack did to a girl whose child threatened a line.

She wrote that she had come back only when the old Alpha was dying and the old fights were over, and that by then she was too ashamed to tell anyone why she had left.

She wrote: "Your father was Alpha of Cedar Ridge, Slade's father. He never knew. I thought I was protecting you. Now I think I was protecting myself."
