Chapter 13: The Empty Room

Slade's POV

I drove to Brazos Treatment Center at eleven that night and told no one where I was going.

I took the plain sedan and left my beta at the house.

Peyton had spent the afternoon at my desk with a list of five pack boys.

She cried over every name, and I called all five.

Not one of them had ever been tested at Brazos.

When I told her, she said the boy must have used a cousin's name, and she said it fast, and she laid her hand on my sleeve.

I had let her do that for nine years.

Tonight it bothered me, and I couldn't say why.

The night nurse sat behind the front desk with a chart open.

She looked up and did not stand.

"Alpha Haught. Visiting hours ended at eight."

"I want to see Cara Quinlan's file."

"Cara Quinlan is dead."

"I know that." My voice came out rough. "I want her file, Ms. Higginbotham."

"The file belongs to her next of kin, and that isn't you."

"I never froze her care. I froze the extra funds."

"The center sent your office three notices about that deposit," she said. "Your assistant signed for each one."

I stared at her.

"I never saw them."

"I believe you," Joanie Higginbotham said, and she did not sound relieved. "That's what scares me."

I stood there with my hands open at my sides.

I was the Alpha of four hundred wolves, and I did not know what to do with them.

"Let me sit in her room," I said. "Ten minutes."
