Chapter 20: Ask Me

Three days of statements and phone calls went by, and on the night before the hearing I could not sit still.

I paced the guest house kitchen in Cara's green sweater while Ronan watched me from the table.

I had practiced the words in the shower and in the car and in the dark.

Every time, the pack boy's face came into them.

"He's twenty," I said. "He didn't seal anything. Somebody put a statement in front of him."

"Probably."

"If I tear him apart tomorrow, I'm no better than her."

"Then don't tear him apart. Ask him one honest question."

"What if he lies to my face?"

"Then everyone in that hall will watch him do it."

I stopped at the sink and gripped the edge.

My hands would not stay still.

He stood and came up behind me, and he did not touch me.

"Tell me what you need tonight," he said.

"I need to stop thinking."

"Nessa."

"I'm not hiding." I turned around. "I'm asking. There's a difference, and you made it, and I'm using it."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he lifted me onto the counter by the waist, and I wrapped my legs around his hips and pulled his mouth down to mine.

He kissed me hard, with his hand fisted in the back of the sweater.

I dragged it over my head and threw it on the floor.

His shirt followed it, and my bra, and he bent and took my breast in his mouth.

I gasped and arched into him, and my fingers went into his hair.

"Ronan."

He sucked at the peak of it, then bit it gently, then moved to the other.

His hand slid up my thigh and under the waistband of my leggings, and he found me soaking wet.
