Chapter 17: In Debt
I dried my hands on a paper towel, one finger at a time.
"Just in debt," I said.
"I'm not being cruel." Kaylin smiled. "I'm being honest. Holden says that's the most loving thing you can be."
"Have you ever been in debt, Kaylin?"
"No. I pay what I owe."
"Every day? By six?"
"I don't even have to think about it."
I threw the paper towel in the bin and took out my phone.
I was still on Holden's household account.
He couldn't take me off it without closing the balance, and he needed the balance open for his lawsuit.
So every payment out of his EvenUp card showed up in my feed, in the little gray letters.
I'd been reading it for a month. Line by line.
He'd set Kaylin up with her own household, with himself as the other half.
I held the phone out to her.
"Look."
She didn't want to. She looked anyway.
"Settle, K.S.," I read. "5:59 p.m. Two hundred and six dollars."
I scrolled.
"Settle, K.S. 5:59. Ninety dollars. Settle, K.S. 5:59. Fourteen hundred. Every day since April. One minute before six."
