Chapter 18: The Ferris Wheel
I didn't call him.
I took the bus to Capitol Hill and climbed his shaking stairs at six that evening, when he'd just be getting up.
He opened the door in a T-shirt and sweatpants, with his hair flat on one side and a pillow crease on his cheek.
"Prewitt." He squinted at the light. "Is something on fire?"
"They subpoenaed you."
"I know. A guy handed me the envelope in the hospital garage. Come in. I'll make coffee."
I sat at his little table while he ran the grinder.
"Why you?" I said. "You're not a party. You're a nurse."
"I'm the nurse who met the car." He measured coffee without looking. "His lawyer wants to say the county messed up, or that I'm biased. Probably both."
"Are you?"
"Biased?" He turned around. "Prewitt, I'm the most biased man in Colorado."
I didn't smile.
"They'll ask you about that night," I said. "Everything. Under oath. With him in the room."
"I know."
"What are you going to say?"
He set two mugs on the table and sat across from me, his knees bumping mine.
