The cafeteria went on around us.

I sat very still with half a burrito in front of me.

"Say it again," I said.

"6:06, the midwife called. 6:08, it was canceled from his number."

"I heard him make a call at 6:08. In the car. I thought it was work."

Abe didn't say anything.

"There was an ambulance coming," I said. "For me. For her."

"About four minutes out, from the run sheet."

Four minutes.

Instead we'd sat on Colfax for half an hour behind a bus.

I stood up. My chair went over backward and somebody at the next table jumped.

Abe stood up too.

"Prewitt. Where are you going?"

"To ask him."

He put his hand flat on the table between us.

"I can't give you the run sheet. I'd lose my license. You have to request it yourself."

"I don't need the paper today," I said. "I need to see his face when I say the time."

I waited until Monday.

EvenUp held its all-hands every Monday at nine, in the big open room on the top floor of a brick warehouse in RiNo.

I knew because I'd been to forty of them.

My face was still on the wall in the lobby, six feet tall, beside his. We were laughing over a restaurant check.

LOVE IS A FAIR SPLIT.

The girl at the front desk saw me, saw the poster, and buzzed me through without a word.

My badge still worked on the elevator.

The top floor was all exposed beams and standing desks and a coffee bar that served oat milk for free.

About two hundred people sat on beanbags and folding chairs facing a little stage.

Holden was on it, in his quarter-zip, with a clicker in his hand.

Kaylin stood off to the side with her tablet.

The slide behind him said: Q2. RECONCILIATION RATE 99.4%.

"And that's the number that matters," he was saying. "Because when people pay what they owe on time, every time, they stay together. Fairness is the product."
