Chapter 21: Anything You Ask

Cillian's POV

The divorce decree came by courier at six that evening.

Neil's lawyer had stopped fighting it the day his client went back into a cell.

I read it standing in my study, twice, and then I put it on the desk and looked at it for a long time.

She was free.

The license I had signed under the garden arbor was now a real marriage.

I should have been happy.

I sat down and wrote the thing I had been writing in my head for a week.

Terms of release.

It was one page.

It said the year was ended.

It said she could stay in my house or leave it, with Hattie, with any sum she named, and that I would put nothing in her way.

It said it was her choice, and no court or doctor or villain was forcing it anymore.

I signed the bottom.

I put the page in an envelope and went upstairs to leave it on her pillow.

Then Neil had turned up at the gate, and I had stood next to her in the dark and watched her do the hardest thing she'd done all week, which was nothing.

Now it was past midnight.

I sat in the study with a single lamp on and the safe standing open.

I had promised her nothing hidden.

So I had stopped hiding the fear.

The door opened.

She stood there in her robe with the paper in her hand and her hair still damp from the shower.

She had the new ring on.

"Terms of release," she said.

"Yes."

"You wrote this."

"Yes."

"When?"

"Before the gate."

She came in and shut the door.

"You think I'm only here because of Hattie's operation," she said.

"I think you stayed because I was the man who could save her. I've watched you for a week, and it's all I can see when I look at you."
