Chapter 8: The Note on Garner Group

Cillian's POV

The banker called me at ten at night, on the night before my wedding.

"Mr. Draper, the Garner Group note is yours if you still want it," he said. "The bank agreed to sell."

"Send the papers to my office," I said.

"Mr. Garner doesn't know the lender has changed?"

"He'll know when I tell him."

I hung up and stood at the window of my study.

Neil Garner had borrowed against his own headquarters two years ago, and he had never once been late.

Now he was my debtor.

I hadn't planned it.

I had read the notice on the third night in a waiting room at Leacrest General, with Penelope's blood still on my cuffs, and I had not been able to stop reading it.

The company that man ran had started on a signature from her father.

He had used up every kindness that signature had bought him, and he had thrown away her daughter on top of it.

I wanted him to feel the floor go.

I didn't want it fast.

I opened the safe behind my desk.

On the top shelf lay a plain gray folder with only a few pages in it.

I had not opened it in six years.

I didn't open it now.

I touched the corner and shut the door.

Her father had made me promise something the night he died.

I had kept the promise, and it had cost me every day since.

"Not yet," I said to the empty room.

I put on my coat and drove to the hospital.
