Chapter 9: The Wedding Neil Crashed

Penelope's POV

Two hundred people sat in white chairs on the lawn of the Draper estate.

I stood behind a hedge of white roses in a dress somebody had altered overnight.

A camera crane hung above the aisle.

You don't have to do this, I told myself.

Yes, I do, I answered.

Through the hedge I could see Hattie at the end of the aisle in a wheelchair with a basket of petals in her lap.

Her gray rabbit was tucked under her arm, wearing a tiny ribbon.

Beside the altar stood Cillian in a black suit, with his eyes on the aisle.

The music started.

I walked.

Every head turned, and I heard the murmur go up and down the rows.

That's the woman from the video, somebody whispered.

I kept my eyes on Hattie.

When I reached her she threw a handful of petals at my feet, and most of them landed in my shoes.

"That's how you do it," she said, very serious.

"Thank you, sweetheart."

Cillian held out his hand, and I took it.

The officiant opened his book.

"Dearly beloved..."

"Stop!"

The shout came from the back.

I turned.

Neil was coming up the aisle in a gray suit, with Marjorie on his left and Kirsten on his right.

Kirsten had worn a cream dress with sleeves.

It was not white, but it was close enough that three women in the front row gasped.

Four of Cillian's security men stepped into the aisle.

"This is a private ceremony," one said.

"This is my wife!" Neil shouted over his shoulder. "She's still legally married to me. This is bigamy, it's a crime, and every one of you is about to be a witness."

The murmur rose.

I felt Cillian's hand tighten, and I squeezed it back once.
