Chapter 16: Room Nine
The Subaru was parked behind the Sagebrush Motor Lodge in Casper, with its nose against a dumpster.
Jesse had guessed the place.
It stood two blocks from the hospital where Lottie was born, and Kit had stayed there for a week afterward, because it was the one thing she could pay for in cash.
He knocked on room nine, and nobody answered.
"Kit," I said to the door. "It's Abby. I'm alone with Jesse and I have no deputy."
The chain slid back.
She stood in the gap in yesterday's jeans, with her hair flat on one side and her eyes red.
Behind her Lottie sat cross-legged on the bed, holding a motel soap in both hands like a sandwich.
"You came all this way," Kit said.
"We came all this way."
She let us in.
The room smelled of cigarette smoke from an earlier tenant and of the baby's graham crackers.
There was a duffel on the chair, a car seat on the floor, and an unopened box of cereal on the nightstand.
Jesse sat on the edge of the other bed and looked at his hands.
"You said you'd take her where he couldn't find us," I said. "He found you in a day. He didn't even have to look. The foreman's wife saw your car at the gas station on Route 16."
"I know."
"Then why did you leave?"
Kit sat down hard on the bed beside Lottie.
"Because of what he did on Sunday," she said. "I didn't tell you."
"Tell us now," Jesse said.
Kit laughed once. It broke in the middle.
"He came to Casper Sunday night. Not to the apartment. To the diner where I wait tables on Sundays. He sat in the booth in his good hat and ordered pie."
