Chapter 22: Not for Me
I didn't say anything on the steps.
I took his wrist, the way I had at the dance, and walked him down to the harbor.
We walked all the way to Caroline Street without a word.
The pier was ours now.
At the end of it stood the ice house, its brick black with a hundred years of salt.
The sun was going down orange behind it.
I unlocked the gate with the key the steward had given me an hour earlier.
We walked out to the ice house and I put my back against the brick.
"Don't," I said.
Dario stood in front of me with his hands in his coat pockets.
"Don't what?"
"Don't do it for me."
His jaw set.
"I told you I'm not deciding it for you."
"You're deciding it because of me. It's the same thing." I folded my arms. "You stand up at that table and give up your seat, and every boss in that room will know why. The Keeper's man. Bought, just like Chiara said."
"So I should stay what I am."
"I didn't say that."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I'm saying I won't be your reason!" It came out loud. A gull took off from the fence. "I won't be the girl you threw it all away for. You'll look at me in ten years and you'll see everything it cost."
