Chapter 25: What Dario Paid
Every head at the table turned to Dario.
He didn't stand up.
He didn't unfold his hands.
"I put it in," he said. "Every dollar."
Tullio spread his arms to the room.
"You hear? He admits it."
"He admits paying," the Richmond widow said. "I haven't heard anyone admit taking."
"Ennio," I said.
Ennio rose from his chair by the wall.
He took the little notebook out of his cardigan and put on his reading glasses.
He read them in the same dry voice he used for the weather.
"March, two years ago. The boat. Sold for four hundred and ten thousand."
"I bought that boat," the Annapolis boss said. "Overpaid, too."
"His mother's house in Ocean City. Nine hundred and forty thousand. Holdings shares, a few at a time, for two years. All of it through a bank in Delaware, all of it to Mazzola by courier, in cash."
He turned the notebook around and laid it beside the Ledger.
"Look at the dates," he said.
"Every withdrawal comes first," I said. "Every deposit comes after. Two weeks after. Three. Never once before."
