We were dressed and down the stairs in four minutes.
Dario found my pencil on the second landing and handed it to me without a word.
I twisted my hair up with it in the street.
The pier was already full.
I'd invited every Family to the opening myself, on the Keeper's cream paper.
Come and see what a bank's own deposits can build, when nobody steals them.
They'd come.
The Philadelphia boss had brought his wife, who wanted to see the boats.
The Richmond widow sat in a folding chair under the ice house eaves with a parasol and a thermos.
Around them stood the co-op.
A hundred and fifty members in their work jackets, the boatyard women, the fishermen and their families, the apprentices in hard hats with ribbons on them.
The crossword teller looked at my hair, then at Dario, then at me.
She wrote something in her crossword.
In the middle of all of it, on the new boards, stood Tullio Venturi.
He looked smaller.
His camel coat was the same coat, but it hung on him.
His silver hair needed cutting.
