The whole pier heard my father ask it.
The fisherman stopped tying his line.
The Richmond widow lowered her coffee.
Dario didn't let go of my hand.
"Honorable ones, Mr. Mazzola," he said.
"Hm," said my father.
"But I'm not asking you for her."
My father's eyebrows went up on one side.
"No?"
"No, sir. She's not yours to give. I'll ask her. When I ask, I'll do it right."
My father looked at him a long time.
Then he looked at me.
"Good answer," he said. "She bites."
The pier laughed.
Dario laughed too, and his hand tightened on mine.
My father picked up his cane from the ice house wall and walked back to his chair on his own.
He didn't ask me anything.
He didn't have to.
For a week, Dario didn't ask either.
He went to work on the pier at six.
He came to Sunday dinner and ate three plates of my mother's lasagna.
I told him he could stay upstairs.
He said he'd stay when he'd asked me properly.
