Room nine at the Linden Court Motel had a green door with the paint peeling off in strips.
Eli stood in front of it for a long time.
His hand would not make a fist to knock.
He had left the notebook open on the bed, where Laurence would find it.
He thought of the last page.
He thought of Laurence's handwriting, pressed so hard it dented the paper, asking for one thing.
He knocked.
The door opened on a chain.
Dale looked out through the gap.
He had a can of beer in one hand and Carlton's check stuck in his shirt pocket.
"Well, now," he said. "Changed your mind."
"Open the door," Eli said.
"Is that how you speak to your father?"
"Open the door, or I say it through the chain."
Dale looked at him for a second.
Then the chain rattled and the door swung wide.
Dale stepped back with a lazy half bow to let Eli in.
