Chapter 17: Same Side of the Bench
Two police cars came up the road with no sirens, and nobody in the motel moved until the doors opened.
They took Dale out in handcuffs.
He did not struggle, and he did not look at Eli.
He kept his eyes on the ground and his shoulders folded inward.
For the first time Eli saw him as he was, a small man who had been afraid the whole time.
It did not make Eli feel anything he had expected.
He had thought it would feel like winning.
Instead it felt like putting down something very heavy and finding that his arms still hurt.
"Mr. Sorrell?"
The officer was a woman about forty with a notepad.
She sat him on a plastic chair in the motel office and gave him a paper cup of water.
"I need your statement. Take your time."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Start wherever you like," the officer said.
He told her about the letter first, and the gate, and the car.
He told her about the no-contact order.
His voice was steady, and when it shook he stopped and drank and started again.
