Eli lasted until nine o'clock on Monday morning.
He walked up the steps of Bell Hall in his old hoodie, with the grey coat left at home.
Every head in the lobby turned.
A girl whispered behind her hand.
A boy held up a phone and laughed.
"Heel," someone said, low, and someone else snorted.
His mouth went dry.
His body knew the corridor and the open door of the lecture hall.
It knew the quiet that comes before the laughing.
Eli turned around and went back down the steps into the cold air.
He got as far as the coffee cart.
"Hey," Abe said. "Look at the wall."
"I can't."
"Look at the wall, Eli."
Eli looked.
The brick behind the cart was covered in sticky notes.
Yellow, pink, green and blue, in a hundred different handwritings, stuck up in rows.
I knelt for my landlord once. It's not your fault.
My dad locked me in the basement. Respect.
Brant is a coward.
Eli stays.
He read them with his hand over his mouth.
"Nana's idea," Abe said.
"I put a pad on the cart this morning and told people to say something. They came back with notes. Nobody asked for your name. They already knew it."
