Chapter 13: Four Hours
The facility was a low brick building behind a hedge, with a glass door and a plastic ficus in the lobby.
A nurse took my phone and my coat and sealed them in a clear bag.
She wrote my name on the bag in marker, spelled right.
Behind the cruiser, Ansel's headlights swung into the lot and stopped.
The older officer looked back at them and said nothing.
"Wait here," the nurse told me, and led me to a small room with two chairs and a table bolted to the floor.
I sat with my hands folded and waited.
The woman who came in at half past six wore a gray blazer and had her reading glasses pushed up into her hair.
She was the attending physician, and she held Hugh's petition in one hand with several lines underlined.
"Ms. Marsh. I have to see you within hours of arrival, and I'm going to do it properly."
"Thank you."
"Your brother says you haven't slept or eaten in days. When did you last eat?"
"Last night. Soup, at my aunt's table. Then bread, I think, at eleven."
"Sleep?"
"Not much. A few hours."
"Why not much?"
I thought about the stairs, and the quilt, and the streetlight on the wall.
"I was with someone I love," I said. "It's not a symptom."
She wrote something down and didn't look up.
"The petition says you followed your former fiancé down Newbury Street and shouted at him."
"I stood on the far side of the street, a hundred feet away. He crossed it to reach me. I told him to stop approaching me, because of an order he wrote himself."
"Do you have proof of that?"
