Chapter 19: The Trust
Ruth held out the envelope.
"Open it, dear. In front of everyone. Your mother would have wanted a crowd."
"That's mine," Hugh said. "It's trust property. I'm the trustee."
"You were the trustee," said the lawyer, stepping up beside Ruth. "Until she married."
The lawyer held up a single page: the Providence certificate, which Ansel had passed him a moment before.
"Marriage ended the trust on the day of the ceremony, eleven weeks ago. Everything in it passed to Mrs. Winslow outright. That envelope is hers. So is the house."
Hugh stared at the paper.
I broke the seal.
The flap came away easily.
Inside was one sheet, folded in thirds, in the blue ink my mother used for everything from grocery lists to birthday cards.
My hands did not shake.
I didn't want them to.
I read it aloud, because the room had gone quiet enough to hear a page turn.
"My Leona. If you're reading this, you've married, and it's yours now, the house and the shares and every dull piece of paper. I made your brother the trustee until then because I was afraid of the sort of man who would charm you out of it. I should have been afraid of a different sort."
Someone behind me drew in a breath.
"Hugh will tell you he looked after you. Ask him what he sold. Ask Ruth to show you what I asked her to keep. And Lee, you were never as fragile as the family liked to say. You were only kind to people who didn't deserve it. Be kind to yourself now. Love, Mom."
