Chapter 8: What He Knew

At midnight Ruth went up to bed and left the porch light on.

Ansel and I stayed in the kitchen with the lamp off and the streetlight coming through the curtains.

He had checked every window twice.

The man in the green jacket had not come back.

"He'll have my name by morning," Ansel said. "A man with my face and a flight from Bergen takes an hour to find."

"Then Clay knows by breakfast."

"Not from Hugh. Hugh won't call him before he's sure. He'll want to hold it."

"And then?"

"Then he'll hold it at the rehearsal dinner tomorrow night, in front of both families." He rubbed his eyebrow with his thumb. "I'm invited to that too."

"Of course you are."

I got up and filled the kettle I had forgotten about earlier.

My back was to him when he spoke again.

"Leona. Rule four."

"No lies."

"There's a second thing I haven't told you."

I put the kettle down.

"You said the invitation was it."

"It was the thing about the wedding. This is another thing." His voice was steady. "In December a friend of mine in Boston sent me pictures."

I turned around.

"Of Clay," he said. "At a charity dinner on the harbor. With a woman in a cream dress. His hand was at her back, and she was laughing. They were not strangers."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"In December," I said.

"December."

"The rooftop was in June."

"Yes."

"And you looked at those pictures."
