Chapter 9: The Date

Marcello's POV

At one in the morning I was sitting on the edge of a narrow bed in my grandmother's spare room, holding a phone she had given back.

I had stopped looking at the email in the first ten minutes.

I knew it by heart.

I called New York. It was eight in the evening there, and the head of our IT department answered on the second ring.

"Mr. Ferraro?"

"I need something checked tonight. Not tomorrow."

"Of course."

"An email from eight years ago. An internal one from Naomi Hargrove, sent in December. I need to know when her account was created."

He said nothing for a moment.

"Her account?"

"The date she got her login."

"Hold on."

I heard keys. I heard him breathe.

I thought about the wedding photograph in the tin. Naomi in a plain white dress, not yet showing, with her hands in front of her.

She had looked at the camera and smiled.

I had never asked what she was smiling at.

"Sir," the head of IT said. "I'm looking at the old directory."

"Go on."

"Ms. Hargrove started in the first week of December that year. She was a contract attorney for two weeks. Contract staff all shared the intake login. No personal accounts."

"And the personal account?"

"Created the Monday after your winter party."

My hand closed on the phone.

"The Monday after."

"Yes, sir. That is when she was made a full-time associate. It's in the log."

"What day was the email?"
