Chapter 12: What Happened on the Ice

Declan sat up and turned on the lamp.

The light was yellow and small.

He pulled the blanket over my shoulders before he said anything.

"I have to tell you something," he said. "I should have told you four years ago."

"Then tell me."

"You won't want me touching you when I'm done."

"Tell me anyway."

He looked at his hands.

"The last night at the cabin, you and Delphine went out onto the lake after midnight," he said. "She said she wanted to show you the stars."

"I remember the cold. I remember walking."

"I was on the dock. Rodney was next to me, drinking a beer. Tobin was in the cabin getting more wood."

"Why were we on the ice?"

"She said it was frozen solid. She said it was a game." His voice was flat. "You were laughing. You'd had a couple of drinks. You went out maybe forty yards."

My mouth had gone dry.

"There was a dark patch past where you were standing. Thin ice. The whole town knew it. Tobin had warned her about it that morning."

"And?"

"She stopped walking. You didn't. You were looking at the sky." He swallowed. "She came up behind you and put both hands on your back and pushed."

I didn't say anything.

I couldn't.
