Chapter 5: Say It Out Loud

I took a cab home and paid the driver double to drop me at the corner.

Bea was already there, in her scrubs, with her car keys in her fist.

"I'll drag her off," she said.

"Don't touch her. That's what she wants on camera."

"Then what do we do?"

"We let her finish."

I walked up the block and stopped at the foot of my own front steps.

Delphine saw me and her whole face crumpled.

"Emme." She stood up with the phone in both hands. "Thank you for coming. I've been so worried."

On her screen, the counter had gone to fourteen thousand.

The comments crawled by too fast to read.

Queen, protect her. She's shaking. Where's the mistress.

I sat down on the second step.

After a moment, she sat too, a careful foot of space between us.

I looked into the lens.

"Hi, everyone," I said. "I'm Emme. I'd like to read you something."

I took the pizza flyer out of my coat and flattened it on my knee.

"Three things. First, an annulment, filed this week. Second, a post from Delphine saying I never knew about the marriage. Third, her crew leaves me alone."

"Emme," Delphine said softly. "We can talk about this inside."

"We can do it here."

"It's cold."

"I'm used to it."

She gave a small laugh, and for one second her mouth went thin.

The comments changed speed.

Wait what. She asked for an annulment? So who's the mistress then.

"I'm not accusing her of anything," I said. "I'm just asking her to say yes. You said yes last night, Delphine. In Bea's kitchen. You said tomorrow."
