Chapter 7: The Fourth Brick
Emme's POV
MacMaster Studio was two floors above a bike shop, with exposed brick and six desks and a coffee machine that sounded like it was dying.
Declan met me at the door at nine on Thursday.
He wore the same navy sweater, or one just like it.
"Your desk is the one by the radiator," he said. "I put you there on purpose."
"Why?"
"Your hands."
I looked down.
I had pulled them into my sleeves again without noticing.
"I'm not cold," I said.
"Okay."
"I'm not."
"Okay." He pointed at the desk. "The radiator's still the best seat."
The team was four people, none of them older than thirty-five.
A woman with purple glasses showed me the server.
A man in a Vikings cap told me the coffee machine had to be hit twice.
I sat down, and for the first time in four days nobody was filming me.
At noon, Declan brought me a sandwich and sat on the edge of the next desk.
"You said you'd tell me the rest when I started," I said.
"I did."
"I started."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Before you, there was a woman Rodney dated in college. Delphine showed up at her dorm with a camera. She told everybody the girl was sleeping with a married professor. Nobody checked. She transferred out in March."
"That's one."
"There was another one, after he took over the company. A project manager. Delphine's crew turned up at the site with signs. She quit."
"Rodney protected Delphine both times."
