Chapter 22: The Board Room
The Silver Ridge boardroom had a table for twenty and a view of the whole city.
Daniel's uncle was already standing at the head of it.
"Gentlemen, ladies," he said. "It is with real sorrow that I bring this motion."
Twelve board members sat with folders closed in front of them.
Daniel's uncle laid one hand on a stack of papers.
"My nephew has been unwell for fourteen months. I have signed for him in good faith since the spring."
He smiled around the table.
"Today I ask you to sell his shares to a rival firm, on his behalf, for his own protection."
The doors opened.
Johnny pushed the chair through them.
He wore the grey suit Daniel's mother had pressed.
There was a tomato stain on the cuff that nobody had had the heart to remove.
Behind them came Daniel's mother and father, and his grandmother with her cane.
Two men from the security desk had been told to stand at the door and look neutral.
The room went silent.
"Good morning," Daniel said. "I'm not resting."
His uncle's smile did not change.
"Nephew. How lovely. But you shouldn't have come. Your doctors..."
"I have a doctor. She wants two weeks of pills on time, and I'm on day eleven." Daniel rolled to the table. "Sit down, Uncle. You're making the board nervous."
His uncle sat.
It was the first time in Daniel's life that he had told him to do anything.
The chairman, a woman of seventy in a navy suit, cleared her throat.
"Daniel. You are not, I understand, in a position to sign."
"I can sign my name. Pass me a pen."
A pen came down the table, hand to hand.
Daniel took it.
He put a bare hand on the table's polished edge, and did not reach for his pocket.
