Chapter 10: The Wedding

At five minutes to four, I sat in the corridor outside the grand ballroom with Knox's hand on my chair.

"You don't have to do this," he said.

"Yes, I do."

"I can empty the room."

"If you empty it, there's nobody to see."

He looked down at me, and at the red dress I had bought that morning.

"I'll be at the back," he said.

"Don't say anything."

"I wasn't going to."

He opened the doors for me.

The ballroom was full.

A hundred and twenty guests sat in white chairs on both sides of an aisle strewn with petals.

The same floral arch stood at the end of it, twice as tall as before.

The quartet had started the processional.

Preston stood under the arch in a black tuxedo, with his mother in the front row in pale blue.

Skylar came down the aisle on her uncle's arm, in ivory silk with the pearl bracelet at her wrist.

I let her walk the whole way.

The officiant read the opening words.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today."

I rolled one wheel forward.

"If anyone knows a reason these two should not be joined," he said, and smiled around the room, "speak now."

"I do," I said.

I did not shout it.

I said it into the pause, and every head in the ballroom turned.

The quartet stopped.

Skylar's uncle let go of her arm.

I rolled up the aisle through the petals, with my chair making a soft crunch on the flowers.

Preston's face went white and then flat.

"Lydia," he said. "Not here."

"Here," I said. "In front of everyone you invited."
