Chapter 9: The Board

I did not see Preston again until Friday morning.

The Conwell Freight boardroom sat on the twelfth floor, with a long walnut table and my father's portrait over the window.

Seven directors sat around the table.

Preston sat at the head of it, in my father's chair.

Skylar sat at his elbow with a laptop, taking the minutes.

My lawyer rolled me in through the double doors, in his brown cardigan, with a banker's box on his arm.

Knox stayed in the lobby downstairs.

I had asked him to.

Preston stood up at once, with his hands out.

"Lydia. Thank you for coming. Please, everyone, give her some room."

Seven pairs of eyes went to my chair.

I rolled to the foot of the table.

"I'll sit here," I said. "Where I can see all of you."

"Of course." Preston sat down slowly. "Directors, I regret that my wife's health has made this meeting necessary. As you know, Lydia has been through a great deal."

"As you know," I said, "I've been through it with you."

The chair of the board, an older man in gray, cleared his throat.

"Mr. Aldous, you called this meeting to discuss Mrs. Aldous's position."

"Yes. The police report is in your packets." Preston lifted a page. "It states that Lydia was the driver in a fatal accident on Route 9. She doesn't recall it. She has since signed away two million dollars of family money without reading it, and she has divorced me without understanding what she signed."

A director shifted in his seat.

"I've kept the company steady for six months," Preston said. "I'm asking the board to continue my authority as acting chair until her competence can be reviewed."
