Chapter 21: No Shooting at Mercy
I sat up on the canvas with the phone in my hand.
Conall was awake.
"Eight," he said.
"Eight."
"I can get you two of them back by tonight."
"No."
"I didn't say how."
"You didn't have to." I pulled my sweater on. "Friday at four, that boardroom is going to be full. Not of your men. Of mine."
"You have men?"
"I have four thousand, one hundred and six of them," I said. "And everybody who carried them in."
Sunday night at seven, shift change, I stood on an overturned milk crate in Mercy's ambulance bay.
I was still suspended.
I didn't set one foot inside the doors.
My charge nurse had sent one text to every nurse on the trauma floor.
The night resident had sent one to every resident.
A paramedic I'd worked with for six years had put it on the radio, which was against the rules, between calls.
By seven-fifteen there were sixty people in the bay, nurses and residents and three ambulance crews.
Then a patrol car pulled in.
Then another.
A sergeant got out, gray and heavy, and folded his arms.
Six years ago I'd taken a bullet out of his partner's neck.
