Chapter 12: Maya Goes

The student union held its open forum on Tuesday, and Maya signed up for the last speaking slot.

Noah knew because Henry had read the sign-up sheet aloud at breakfast.

"She wants the projector," Henry said. "She's put down Matters of Student Conduct."

"Let her have it," Noah said.

Troy dropped his spoon.

"You want her to play it?"

"I want everyone to see it. Then I want to answer it myself."

The hall was full by six.

Four hundred students filled the seats and the aisles, and George sat in the third row with his arm around Noah's mother.

Noah had asked them to come.

He had said only: I want you there, and I'll tell you why after.

Maya walked to the lectern at ten past seven in a gray dress, with a laptop under one arm.

"I'm sorry to bring this up," she said, in her sweet voice. "But the union should know who it's letting into its leadership. Three officers have been involved in conduct that I think the students deserve to see."

She connected the cable.

The screen behind her lit up with a green pool at night, and a glass wall, and four shapes.

Somebody gasped.

Somebody laughed.

It played for a few seconds.

Then Noah stood up in the front row, walked up the center aisle and took the cable out of the laptop with one hand.

The screen went black.

"That's me," he said. "I'm twenty-one. I live in that house. The other three are my stepbrothers, and I want all three of them. It's my business, and I chose it."

The hall had gone completely silent.

"Maya did all of it to scare me out of the house," Noah went on. "Now she wants to read it to you. Go ahead, Maya. Read it out loud."

He turned to her.

"I'm not scared."

Maya's face flushed red.

"You don't belong in that family," she said, low and shaking. "You're a baker's son."

"Yes," Noah said. "I'm good at it."

Somebody near the back actually clapped.

Then Henry came down the aisle in his union jacket, and stopped beside Noah.

"Point of order," Henry said into the microphone. "Section nine of the charter. Recording a student without consent is a privacy violation. Maya Rhodes, you're a student here. I'm referring this to the dean's office tonight."
