Chapter 11: No Tallies

"Damon Carraway," the detective said again. "I need you to turn around."

"You can't do this here," he said. "This is a church."

"It was a church when you said it, too."

She took his wrist. The cuffs made a small clean sound.

Sixty people watched the vice president of Carraway Realty put his hands behind his back.

"You are under arrest for giving a false statement to a law enforcement officer."

"Mama."

Judith had not moved from her chair. Her face was perfectly calm.

"Mama, call the lawyer."

"I've already called him," Judith said. "Keep your mouth closed, Damon."

A second officer touched Laney's elbow.

"Delaney Carraway, you also need to come with us. You're being charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries."

"No," Laney whispered. "No, I told the truth. I said I was sorry."

"Yes, ma'am. You did, in front of a lot of people."

They took her out through the double doors. She did not look back.

The room filled with a low murmur.

A woman near the coffee urn said, "Judith, is it true?"

"Of course not."

"I heard what the boy said," a man added. "I heard what Damon said."

"We should all go home," a third voice said. "Let's let the family have some privacy."

The circle broke apart. People set down their cups and picked up their coats.

Nobody looked at Judith on the way out. A few of them gave Quinn a nod.

One woman stopped beside my chair and touched my sleeve.

"I'm so sorry, dear," she said.

Then she went to find her purse.
