Chapter 21: The Gala
The Carraway Foundation gala was held in the ballroom of the old hotel on Bull Street, under three crystal chandeliers.
Three hundred people sat at round tables with white cloths, eating a plated dinner and waiting to applaud.
I came in at the back, in a green dress my neighbor had let out at the seams, with Quinn beside me in his wheelchair and his friend from the port holding the door.
Every head near us turned.
A woman at the closest table whispered to her husband, "That's the girl from the post."
"She looks perfectly fine to me," the husband said, not whispering.
The baby was home with my neighbor, asleep, and I had left a bottle and a list of numbers.
I had promised myself one hour.
On the stage stood a lectern with a spray of white roses, and a banner behind it: "Family of the Year."
Judith was at the head table in champagne silk and pearls, with Damon beside her and an empty chair on her other side.
She had seen me come in. She smiled at me over her water glass.
"There she is," Quinn murmured. "She thinks she won."
"She hasn't looked at the door behind us."
The door behind us opened, and Donald walked in.
He wore the same navy blazer he had worn to court. He carried a leather ledger under one arm.
He went down the center aisle, past three hundred people, without a glance at his wife's table.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies said, a little uncertainly. "The founder of Carraway Realty and the foundation's chairman, Mr. Donald Carraway."
There was warm applause. Donald climbed the steps to the stage and took hold of the lectern with both hands.
Judith lifted her glass to him and smiled.
