Chapter 15: The Video
Libby's POV
I sat down on a coil of dock rope and pressed play.
The picture was dark and then bright.
A living room I knew, because I had been in it at Christmas.
Owen sat on the sofa with a glass of scotch tilted in his hand, and his tie was off.
He looked younger.
He looked four years younger, and he was laughing at nothing.
"Is it on?" he said.
"It's on," Delia said from behind the camera.
Her voice was close and warm.
"You're drunk," she said.
"I'm celebrating."
"What?"
"I got my results this week." He lifted the glass. "It's me, Dee."
I stopped breathing.
"It's me. The count's near nothing. One in a thousand, the guy said, if ever."
"Oh, Owen."
"And Libby thinks it's her."
On the screen he smiled, slowly, and drank.
"She's in bed right now with a heating pad, apologizing to the ceiling. Thinks it's her eggs. She cried in the car on the way home from the first appointment."
"And you didn't tell her."
"Let her," Owen said.
I held the phone with both hands.
"Let her think it. She's so good at being sorry." He laughed. "And you know what? Everyone will adore me for staying. Think about it. Four years of that, and I'm the guy who never left."
The picture moved.
Delia had set the phone down on something, and her hand came into the frame to straighten his collar.
"Then she'll never leave," Delia said.
She said it softly, and she sounded pleased.
"Exactly."
"You're a genius."
"I know."
