He Played Husband for Her Dare, So I Left Carrying His Baby novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: Costs

"Don't say it," I told Owen. "Don't say my baby, or our baby, or the baby."

He stood by Wren's car with his hands hanging.

"It's mine," he said. "The test says it's mine."

"The test says you're the father. It doesn't say you get a vote."

"Libby, please. I didn't know it could happen."

"You knew it could happen once in a thousand times. You told me so, on camera, and laughed."

He flinched.

"I'm asking for a chance," he said. "Whatever you want. The house. Anything."

"I already filed for the house."

"Then I'll sign it over."

"You'll sign it because the court will make you, if it comes to that. I'd rather you did it without being made." I opened the car door. "Go home, Owen. I'll have my lawyer write to yours."

I got in, and Wren drove us out past the long line of people walking back to their cars.

In the mirror, he was still standing in the lot.

In late November I was thirty-seven weeks along, and I signed the last paper in my lawyer's office above the bakery, with my feet on a stool.

Wren sat beside me in her scrubs, on her way to a night shift, with her arms folded.

Owen sat across the table in a plain gray sweater.

He had lost weight, and he looked like what he was, a man who had not slept in months.
