Chapter 21: The Hall

The white faded, and I was standing in a hall.

It had no walls I could see, only a floor of pale stone and a ring of seats rising on every side into the dark.

The seats were full.

A hundred thousand players sat in rows that curved up and out of sight, and every one of them was looking at me.

Gabe stood at my right, and Dee at my left, with her glasses pushed up and her jaw set.

The forty stood behind us.

Across the floor, Brett stood alone in his torn collar, with Kelsey beside him.

He had fixed his hair.

Of course he had.

A bench rose out of the stone at the center of the ring, tall and gray, and three voices spoke from it in one tone.

"I'm the petitioner," I said. My voice carried farther than I expected. "I file the evidence."

[State it.]

I looked at the forty and then at the dark rows above them.

"On Day 8, Brett Maddox sent forty freezing players a warm log and a Bond Request in the same trade," I said. "They had a ticking clock and no feeling in their hands. He took their logs, food and talents, and he used Recall to make them work. Then he sold a guild a contract that would have taken my talent."

Exhibits began to rise in the air above me, one after another, each in gold.
