Chapter 18: Cancellations

Jenna's POV

Brooke walked into my shop at ten past ten with eight women behind her.

I knew them all by sight.

They had stood under my arch two nights before, in their silks, with their champagne, and said look at that.

Now they stood in my front room in cashmere and sunglasses, and not one of them looked at the flowers.

Roz had been on the phone all morning, taking the cancellations in a flat voice and writing them on a legal pad.

Eleven.

She put the receiver down and slid in beside me behind the counter.

"Here we go," she whispered.

"Good morning," I said. "Can I help you?"

"We're here to cancel," Brooke said.

"You already did. By phone."

"In person." She turned to the women. "Ladies, I want you to see it for yourselves."

Nobody spoke.

A woman near the door pulled off her sunglasses, and I recognized her as the one who had stopped in front of my arch for a full minute.

"This woman," Brooke said, loud and clear, "took a deposit from my husband's account, knew for weeks that his marriage had a defect, and kept it quiet to humiliate me on my wedding night.

"She slept with my husband's employer while she was legally married to my husband.

"You'd have to ask yourselves what kind of person does that, and whether she should be anywhere near your own events."

It was a good speech.

It came out in order, with pauses.

She had rehearsed it in her car.

"Is that everything?" I said.

"Isn't it enough?"

"It's accurate in places." I put my hands flat on the counter. "I took the deposit. I'm legally married to Travis. I'm sleeping with Sam Redfield, and I'd like to again tonight."
