Chapter 7: Six Minutes Apart
By seven in the morning the nurse had let Ty back in the room, and I had stopped pretending to be calm.
"Tell me about that morning," I said. "All of it. Start with when you left my room."
He sat in the chair Pete had slept in and put his hands between his knees.
"Lena, we've been through the..."
"We haven't. You told me she was in the delivery room. You didn't tell me how you got there."
He looked at the floor.
"I was in your room. You'd been in labor nine hours, and they'd given you the epidural, and you were asleep. Mom came in at about five."
"And?"
"She said Shelby Roark was on the fourth floor in labor, and the baby was mine."
I pressed my nails into the blanket.
"She told you that at five in the morning, in my room, while I slept."
"She said it was better I heard it from her than from Shelby."
"What did you do?"
"I went upstairs."
The room was quiet.
"You left me," I said. "In labor. To go see her."
"I thought I had time. They said hours."
"Then what?"
"Shelby was in the delivery room, screaming, and they wouldn't let me in. Then a nurse came running down the hall and said Mrs. Dolan was in trouble. You were bleeding."
His voice had gone thin.
"I ran down to you. They had you in the operating room. And an hour later a doctor came out and said..."
"Don't."
"Lena, I'm only telling you what you asked."
"I know what the doctor said," I said. "He said our son was born still and I would never be able to carry another child."
