Chapter 16: The Bleed
I stood in the doorway in his flannel and read it three times.
Behind me, the stairs creaked.
Fitz came down in a T-shirt and sweatpants, his hair flat on one side.
He saw my face before he saw the paper.
"What?"
I held it out.
He read it once.
He just took a long breath through his nose.
"He's not the owner," he said. "Not yet. This is a man telling me to be scared."
"Are you?"
"Yes." He folded the notice in half. "But his nine a.m. on the twenty-first is my nine a.m. too."
He went behind the bar and taped the notice to the mirror over the register, right next to the old photo of his father.
Then he made me coffee and kissed the top of my head, and neither of us said anything for a while.
The next Thursday I was on nights.
The night nurse and I had a rhythm by then.
She handed me things before I asked.
I said thank you every time, and she said "don't" every time.
At twelve-forty, the doors from the main hospital banged open.
A floor nurse came through them at a run, pushing a bed by herself.
