Chapter 22: Sunday Table
Giacomo carved the roast with his good arm and ruined it.
"It's supposed to be slices," Lily told him, from the seat beside his.
"It is a rustic style."
"It looks like a dog ate it."
"Lily," I said.
"It looks like a nice dog ate it," she amended.
The long table had thirty chairs and, for the first time, six people at one end of it.
Giacomo sat at the head with his sling off and his cane hooked on the chair.
Dario sat at his right, and across from him were Lily, the boy and Colin's mother.
She had driven the boy down from Montclair in a sensible gray sedan.
I sat at the foot, where I could see all of them.
I had wanted to see all of them.
The boy kept looking at the pony through the window.
"His name's Nobody," Lily explained. "Because nobody asked for him."
"That's a good name," the boy whispered.
"I know. I picked it."
Colin's mother cut the boy's meat into small pieces without being asked, and then she turned to Giacomo.
