Chapter 13: Six Mornings
I hit him.
It was an open hand across the face with all my weight behind it, and the crack carried to the rafters.
Torin's head turned with the blow.
He didn't lift a hand to stop it, and when he looked back at me he was waiting for the next one.
I didn't have a next one in me.
My palm stung to the wrist, and my neck was still on fire.
"The reading is done," the Seer said, to nobody in particular. "It is final, Regent. You are the one who called me."
The Regent stood very straight.
"The Council adjourns," he said, perfectly level. "The Hall needs time to take in what it has seen."
I walked out.
The Guards at the doors stepped back to let me through, and not one of them met my eye.
I got as far as the window seat at the end of the east wing.
I sat on the cold stone and pressed my forehead to the glass.
His boots came down the corridor after a while, slow, and stopped at the corner of the ledge.
He didn't sit.
"You said six days," I said, without turning. "I want all six."
"Willa..."
"Every one. Start at the beginning."
He was quiet for so long that I thought he wouldn't.
"We came up the pass at dawn on the first day," he said. "A wolf can't cross a mated woman's land without leave from her Alpha or his Beta. That's the old treaty. If I cross without it, it's an invasion."
"So you asked."
"The Beta met me at the gate. He said the Luna wasn't receiving anyone. I said I carried word for Willa Ferris from the King. He said the pack had no use for the King's words."
