Chapter 18: The Last Night

The Trial was at dusk tomorrow, and Imogen came to my rooms at nine to tell me I was healed.

She examined me behind the screen, and she took her time.

"Fourteen days gone," she said, drying her hands. "You're mended. The rest is up to you."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me." She pushed her glasses up. "I've seen how that man looks at you. If you walk into that Hall tomorrow without having had him, I'll be disappointed."

"Imogen!"

"I'm forty-six, not dead."

She kissed my forehead and left.

I stood alone for a minute in the lamplight.

Then I put on a robe and went down the corridor barefoot, as I had before.

He opened the door before I knocked.

He was in his shirt sleeves with the left cuff undone, and the scar from the silver ran pale along his forearm.

"It's late," he said.

"Imogen says I'm mended."

His face went very still.

"Say it again."

"She says there's nothing left to wait for." I stepped over the threshold. "I counted too."

He shut the door.

He didn't touch me, and the whole room felt it.

"Tomorrow you could die," he said.

"I know."

"I'd like to be sensible about that."

"Be sensible later."

I took the sash of my robe in both hands and pulled.

It fell open, and I let it slide off my shoulders onto the floor.

He made a low sound in his throat.

Then he was on me, his mouth at mine and his hands in my hair, and the kiss was nothing like the others.

It was slow, and it was bottomless.

He walked me back to the bed, and I sat down on the edge and pulled him down by the shirt.

I got the buttons undone one at a time and put my mouth on his chest, on the long scar across his ribs, on the hollow of his throat.

He shuddered.

"Hands off, Captain," I whispered. "Your rule."
