Chapter 19: White
They cleared the floor of the great hall around the Hearthstone and drew a ring of white sand.
The Alphas sat in a half circle on one side, with their Betas behind them.
The Council sat on the other, in black.
The Regent had a chair of his own, raised, with the Beta of Cedar Hollow at its foot.
Torin stood at the edge of the sand with his arms at his sides.
He had not touched me since the doors opened.
I could feel him anyway, a steady heat in the middle of my chest that wasn't mine.
I wore a plain shirt and leggings and no shoes.
The Marshal stripped to his waist and rolled his shoulders.
"Highness," he said, with a small bow that was almost courteous. "I take no pleasure in this."
"Then yield."
"No."
"Then you will," I said.
The Regent raised his hand and let it drop.
The Marshal went down on all fours, and his bones broke and reset with a sound I felt in my teeth.
He came up as a grey wolf the size of a pony, with a muzzle scarred white along one side.
He circled the sand and looked at me.
I stood still.
I had never done it.
I did not know how.
Somewhere low in me, the thing that had slept for twenty-four years turned over and stretched.
It was not afraid.
I let go.
The pain was real and enormous, and it took my spine and my ribs and my jaw and pulled them all outward at once.
I heard myself scream, and then I heard it change.
White fur ran down my arms.
The floor came up, and the hall dropped away, and I stood on four feet with the cold stone under my pads and every smell in the room standing up around me.
