Chapter 7: Where Were You

Jasper stood at the foot of the east tower, at the edge of the gravel, in yesterday's jacket.

He hadn't shaved.

Two Guards stood either side of him with their hands folded, and neither of them looked friendly.

"Five minutes," I said to the guard beside me. "Then he leaves."

"I'll stand where you can see me, Your Highness," Torin said behind me.

He didn't say it like an order, and I was grateful.

He came down the steps with me and stopped ten feet from Jasper, with his arms crossed and his weight on his back foot.

His eyes never left my ex-husband's hands.

"Willa," Jasper said. "Thank you."

"Say what you came to say."

"I came to take you home."

I laughed, and the Guards didn't, and neither did he.

"I mean it. I was wrong. I was upset, and my mother kept at me all night, and the pack was whispering, and I..." He pushed his hair back. "I want to fix it. I'll go to the Regent and say I made a mistake. We can undo it."

"A rejection can't be undone, Jasper."

"We can get remarried. The Moon Mother will..."

"I want to ask you something."

He stopped.

"Where were you at midnight on the night I lost the baby?" I said. "Not at midnight. At the hour before. At eleven forty-seven."

"I was at the hall. Everyone saw me."

"The band started at eleven. Imogen says nobody saw you in it. Where were you?"

He didn't answer.

A muscle moved in his jaw.

"I called you four times from the clinic phone," I said. "You didn't pick up."

"My phone was on the charger."

"Where?"

He looked at the gravel.

"At Cora's lodge," he said finally. "I went to get something for my mother. I put my phone down in the kitchen and forgot it. She said she'd bring it."
