Chapter 11: The Hook

Doran's POV

I woke on the Hook with the tide coming in around my boots.

The boathouse had been dark when I fell asleep.

Now I lay on the wet sand at the south end of the island with the oilskin over me and the sky going pearl.

My wolf lay stretched out hot and satisfied under my ribs.

I did not remember walking here.

I had done it again, in my sleep, in the cold.

For a long time I lay with the surf hissing around my legs and breathed.

Then I smelled her on my skin.

It was faint, under the salt.

There was the sharp apothecary brine the women wear, and under that something warm and a little sweet, like rope warmed by a hand.

I knew it.

I had smelled it across a car lane on the ferry.

I had smelled it on the church porch on Sunday, on a girl with her chin up and ledger ink on her fingers.

I had smelled it on a woman who sat down beside me at the Gaff and said she did not want my name.

I sat up with sand streaming off my chest.
